PHOENIX – Former Congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Salmon this weekend appeared on the 12 News program “Sunday Square Off.”
Salmon spoke with Brahm Resnik about his plans as governor to improve the lives of Arizonans and about his longtime friendships with two conservative leaders: Speaker Rusty Bowers and Congressman Andy Biggs.
Salmon praised Bowers as “a man of impeccable integrity” and Biggs as a “very, very truthful” man who “follows what he believes is right.”
You can read excerpts from the interview below:
BRAHM RESNIK:
“Let’s go on to Rusty Bowers. You’ve been a friend of his for many years.”
MATT SALMON:
“When I first became a state senator in 1990, I got to know Rusty a little bit. And then in [19]92 he actually got elected to the House and he was my seatmate, and so I’ve known Rusty, gosh, 30 years – I’ve always known him to be a man of impeccable integrity and always, always has done what he believes is right.”
BRAHM RESNIK:
“And so, when you heard his testimony, do you support what he said?”
MATT SALMON:
“Yes. I support Rusty. I believe that Rusty will always act based on what he believes. Now, this guy was summoned to go to that. He was subpoenaed to go to that hearing – he had no options because, if you reject that, you’re held in contempt – and he was sworn under oath. And so I have no doubt that what Rusty said was what he believed 100 percent. I don’t think Rusty would perjure himself if you put a gun to his head.”
BRAHM RESNIK:
“So, what he said was: The Trump White House put incredible pressure on him to help them overturn the results of the election. What’s your response to that? How did that change your view of Donald Trump?”
MATT SALMON:
“Well, my view of Donald Trump has been that many of the policies that he enacted – the Supreme Court that he put in place, which has now overturned Roe v. Wade – are so much in line with the policies and the beliefs that I’ve held dear for so many times. I voted for him as president both times, and I believe he would have been a far better president than Joe Biden. But, when it comes to Rusty’s testimony, I’ve never questioned Rusty’s integrity. I believe that Rusty said everything according to how he believed things happen.”
…
MATT SALMON:
“I’ve known Rusty Bowers for many, many years. I’ve known Andy [Biggs] even longer. And I believe Andy to be very, very truthful.”
…
MATT SALMON:
“I don’t believe Andy would ever, ever try to subvert the Constitution in any way, shape, or form. He’s a decent man, just like Rusty Bowers is, and he follows what he believes is right.”
